You can teach an old dog new tricks!!!

I knew before starting the UNCC writing project that I was interested in using more technology in the classroom. I know my students are writing all of the time, but because it is not "traditional" or scripted writing most teachers, especially English teachers, don't validate it. I want to find a way to incorpoate the technology that kids are using for their writing into the classroom. However, in order to do this, I need to become more proficient. So far the institute has lived up to my hopes. I was interested in the idea of using Goigle maps, but am curious about ways to take this semingly "square" peg and fitting it into the round hole of my curriculum. I can also see practical uses for the flip cam in my classroom. I'm going out this afternoon and buy one. Can't wait to try it out with my students.

  1. Yey, Jennifer! I'm really interested in what you are onto with thinking about what kinds of writing gets validated, especially in English. I think I might borrow this question to pose to students at the beginning of fall semester.

  2. That is awesome to use google maps for our students to show where they are from, or places they visited etc. The technology sites just keeps coming linoit, moodle, vialogue and many more. It is also great to examine what types of writing are validated.

  3. Yuu will like the flip cam. My kids use them to make spontaneous videos about readings and sometimes three-word stories and sometimes lengthy pieces. I love them--use them at high school and elementary school.

  4. i love documenting what goes on, but sometimes when the flip came comes open, we start performing. how do you make something natural and authentic and not just acting?

the google maps is a fun adventure, i can't wait to use it as well. we can even map out a fictional or future trip and speculate about what could or would happen in each place...
